MAKE A DIFFERENCE, FOR GOOD

REJECTING SINGLE USE PLASTIC

Clothing hangers are sometimes called "the plastic straw of the fashion industry".

It has been estimated that 15 billion coat hangers are used by the clothing industry across the world each year. Made mostly from plastic and from wire, the demand on raw materials is enormous.  The carbon cost of production is significant.

Millions of hangers are discarded after only months of use, and as large amounts of plastic, wire and enamel coated wood hangers go to landfill, more harmful carbon emissions are released into the atmosphere.

Produced in Australia, our CLOTHING CARBON CREDITS hangers are made of 100% recycled plastic. Because they are made of one single material (polypropylene), they are fully recyclable.

HOW TO STOP COAT HANGERS GOING TO LAND FILL

Here are some ideas for recycling unwanted coat hangers:

  • If your unwanted hangers are in good condition, ask your local charity thrift shop if they will accept them to display their clothing.
  • Many dry cleaners will accept the return of their metal coat hangers, for reuse.
  • Try to repurpose your unwanted hangers - some creative ideas here!
  • Check if your local council allows hangers to be placed in the recycling bin.  Each Council has its own rules.  For example, North Sydney Council states that broken hangers made all from plastic or all from metal can go into the yellow (recycling) bin.  However broken hangers made from multiple materials that cannot be separated should go into the red bin (ie destined for land-fill). Willoughby Council states that broken coat hangers must be placed in the red general waste bin (ie destined for land-fill).
  • Check if your local council partners with Recycle Smart, for free periodic local pick-ups.  Recycle Smart will accept metal coat hangers for recycling but currently does not accept plastic, wooden or mixed material coat hangers.
  • Check if your local recycling centre will accept the hangers, but if they are of mixed material, you may need to separate the components first.  Many local recycling centres have containers for metal, plastic and wood.
  • The wonderful team at YCA Recycling in South Australia will accept and recycle hangers made of plastic and hangers made of plastic with metal components.  Individual consumers can post a box of unwanted hangers to their depot, but please ensure you check their helpful guide for what is acceptable for their recycling program.
